MISS
BEULAH
SOLD!
This spacious, versatile,
neo-Victorian home is located on College Street at the edge of the Madison
historic district. This property may be counted either as a 4 bedroom,
3-1/2 bath home, or as a 3 bed, 2-1/2 bath with an in-law suite; and is
as functional as it is opulent. With over 3,000 square feet of living
space, a large back porch, two formal entrances on a generous wrap-around
porch, high ceilings, a towering stained glass window, wood-burning fireplace,
and many more features, you can have it all—space, convenience,
utility and dignity. Shopping, schools, parks and sight-seeing are
within walking distance. Route 441 (the Athens-Macon highway) and
I-20 are only a couple minutes away.
The
house was designed by Ian Firestone as a tribute to his grandmother, Beulah
Firestone Cosby for her three children, and was built by Bob and Mary
Bradley in 1999. Mrs. Mary Bradley, a local artist and daughter
of Beulah Cosby, meticulously finished the house with top-quality refinements
from 1999 to 2001. Mr. Firestone engineered rooms that accommodate
the changing needs of modern families, in part by doubling the capacities
of features that normally are inadequate in conventional houses, and by
creating both open and private areas with convenient, versatile features.
Numerous storage spaces are built into walls. The staircase is durable
hardwood, over four feet wide, with landings that make moving furniture
and people safe and simple. The three upstairs bedrooms are accessed
via a balcony with a stunning view of the twenty-foot high entrance and
formal living room. The home's floor ceilings are nine to ten feet,
throughout.
The upstairs master suite was designed to
offer the utmost in privacy and convenience. The sleeping quarters
are crowned with a vaulted ceiling. His and hers walk-in closets
face a dressing area adjacent to the master bathrooms (that's right, more
than one).
The main master bath is a luxury getaway, designed
to maximize comfort and minimize clutter. The 120-gallon whirlpool
tub easily accommodates two, but allows a blissful wallow for one.
The double sink is installed on an six-foot counter, with lots of cabinetry
underneath. Instead of the standard medicine cabinet, the bathroom
offers a medicine closet. The beauty of this bathroom is
enhanced by handmade crown moulding, brass and crystal light fixutres,
and a large picture window completes the room with a view of the neighboring
woods. The master suite's hidden gem is the second bathroom,
providing one additional, private toilet, sink, and a roomy, wood-floored
storage closet that only the masters of the house know is there.
Downstairs, the rooms are divided by either
arched doorways or French doors. The jewel of this level is certainly
the richly appointed formal living room with its soaring ceiling, stained
glass window, marble fireplace, woodwork, chandelliers, and hand-painted
floor. However, the masterpiece of the home is the large, 400+ square
foot bonus room. This spacious room may function as a private family
room, a partitioned business space in the home, an in-law suite or separate
apartment, a play room, gallery, or giant first-floor master bedroom.
This room has its own formal entrance on the side of the house, two large
closets, and is adjacent to a full bath with oversized tub. The
floor features a hand-painted compass on a checkerboard design, protected
by numerous coats of tough, high-gloss polyurethane.
The kitchen and dining room are open, and
united by an Italian style tile floor, which becomes a tasteful, hand-laid
mosaic in the dining area. The family may be seated for meals under
the chandellier, with pleasant views in every direction—into the
kitchen, formal living room, back yard, and a second palladian window
salvaged and restored from a historic home in Georgia, dating back over
120 years. Cooking is made easier by the large appliances, six-burner
stove with handmade brick hood, generous countertops and a matching, moveable
island and breakfast bar. A pantry is only one of three nearby storage
options for kitchen wares, as large, under-stairs closets flank the kitchen.
There's also easy access to the bonus room.
The laundry room is large enough for washing
and folding without compromising the sanctity of other living spaces.
It also functions as a mud room for one of the house's two rear entrances.
The 400 square foot rear deck is a sturdy, attractive area for entertaining,
with built-in benches and a let-in for a flowering tree. The back
yard is large enough for family play; and the rear of the property is
marked by masonry posts which are attractive alone, but may support a
brick wall or an iron or wood fence in the future, if desired. There
is also room at the end of the wide, paved driveway for a large shed or
detached double garage.
As
a final note, the house's concrete footings were dug and poured by the
designer, Ian Firestone, to commercial (not residential) specifications,
twice the width and depth required by local building codes, and on a hard
bed of subterranean clay. This might be one of the sturdiest frame-built
homes in the area. The general contractor, Michael Crisp, said that
Miss Beulah's foundation was "the most level, square and straight
foundation he'd ever built upon" in over 20 years of residential
construction. The masonry finishes to the home enrich its appearance,
with contoured brick skirting around the foundation, brick chimney, and
large, brick front stairs that virtually scroll into twin planters.
The deep, wrap-around porch features a high ceiling with multiple paddle
fans, iron lamps, and provides shade, comfort and a beautiful face to
the street.
The house and its utilities are fully functional,
and have been tested and refined after two years of rental occupancy by
commercial tenants who left not even a thumbprint in their wake.
Homes of this opulence will not suit all tastes, but for anyone wishing
for a solid, regal Southern home with an artistic harmony of classical
and modern, Miss Beulah will steal your heart. Any
visitor to this property will agree that it's a fantastic value at the
Bradleys' offering price.

Location.
The houses featured on this site are located in Madison,
Georgia. Madison is a rare gem, one of a few surviving Georgian
antebellum towns, with numerous mansions and estates that survived the
Civil War. The town is the county seat of
Morgan County, and a crossroads of Interstate 20, the Macon Highway (Rt.
441), Route 129 and railroads. One hour east of Atlanta, half an
hour south of Athens. Voted "Best Small Town in America"
by Travel & Holiday Magazine (Aug. 2001). This tiny city
features distinctive dining (both fine and family), delightful antiques
and curio boutiques, art, and loads of history.
